How To

Grow your own organic vegies

When you visit the fruit and vegetables aisles in the shops, you’ll notice that the organic produce section is continually expanding. Often, though, because of the extra care that goes into their production, organic fruit and vegies are a bit more expensive to buy. That’s why it makes so much sense to grow your own, especially from seed.

You can give your organic vegies and herbs the best possible start by growing them from Yates organic seeds. Yates organic seeds are produced from parent plants that have themselves been grown under strictly controlled conditions. No chemical pest controls or artificial fertilisers have been used anywhere near them. The organic seed packets are clearly marked so that they’re easy to find on the seed racks.

Yates has recently added fourteen vegetables and two herbs to its organic seed selection.
Some that are bound to prove popular are:

Grow vegies in a sunny spot with good drainage or in pots filled with top quality potting mix. Prepare the organic vegetable bed before planting by digging in plenty of organic matter. A blend of well-aged cow manure and compost is ideal.

Add some Dynamic Lifter pellets and/or blood and bone and, as the plants grow, feed them with Yates organic Uplift. Watch out for insect pests like aphids, thrips and caterpillars. These can be controlled with Nature’s Way Fruit & Vegie Gun. It’s based on natural pyrethrum.

Fungal diseases like powdery mildew can be treated with Nature’s Way Fungus Spray.
