Add some indoor plants to your life

More and more we are coming to appreciate that plants add much more than beauty to our lives.

Studies have found that plants enhance human well being, regardless of where they are growing in our environment. But indoor plants have also been proven to make our homes healthier places. And these benefits are not just psychological. Indoor plants can work together with potting mix to remove toxins such as benzene and formaldehyde (called Volatile Organic Compounds) from the air. Volatile Organic Compounds are produced by building materials, carpets, furniture and other common household items such as cleaning fluids.

As far back as the 1970s the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the US found that there were more than 100 potentially dangerous gases in its Sky Lab space shuttles and, as a result, NASA drew up a list of common indoor plants that had been found to be the most efficient at cleaning the air. More recently, studies at the University of Technology in Sydney have produced similar results.

So, while it seems obvious we should introduce some plants into our indoor environments, it’s important to remember that, because plants are living things, they will need some basic care. Here are some guidelines:
